Need for Investment

To raise the visibility of the electric transmission sector and clarify its role in electricity markets.

WIRES regards electric transmission as a distinctive sector of the modern electric power supply business. It provides an invaluable service as the critical link between consumers and reliable, economic power markets. However, transmission has unique challenges in capital formation and regulation that must be addressed.

WIRES contends that adequate transmission capacity must be available to meet the dynamic needs of the twenty-first century’s electrical environment. However, the growth in transmission investment has been insufficient to meet the current demands imposed upon the wholesale power system, and transmission has for too long been underemphasized by utilities, planners, regulators and consumers.

WIRES will employ its resources to educate regulators, legislators, investors, and the public regarding the best means of overcoming the obstacles facing the nation’s electric transmission system today and transforming that system into one that will benefit consumers in the future.
