About Wires
WIRES is a non-profit working group and the voice of electric transmission owners, investors, and customers in the North American energy market. To meet the electricity demands of the 21st Century reliably and in an economically efficient and environmentally responsible way, WIRES actively promotes a legal and public policy climate-- at the state, federal, and international levels that facilitates a robust high-voltage transmission network. WIRES will focus investors, policymakers, and the public on the benefits that transmission solutions hold for the economy, the national security, and the energy-consuming public.
Principles
- To promote investment to strengthen all aspects of the transmission grid to enhance reliability, the economic welfare of the country and its neighbors, and national security.
- To raise the visibility of the electric transmission sector and the need for major investment in regional and interregional transmission additions and enhancements.
- To promote consistent and predictable state and federal rate policies that support transmission investment by ensuring adequate returns on investment, timely cost recovery, and capital attraction.
- To facilitate market access for all sources of electric generation, including renewables, and minimize transmission congestion.
- To advocate efficient, collaborative regional planning and facilities siting processes that ensure beneficial and timely infrastructure investments.
- To support appropriate, cost-effective, and reliable transmission technology choices by transmission owners and investors.
- To achieve the equitable allocation of the costs of transmission facilities and operations across the shared transmission network.
- To benefit electricity consumers and the environment by promoting efficient transmission solutions in regulatory, political, and educational forums.
